In each other we trust emerged from urgent calls for rethinking and planning in Easthampton around the value of arts, how artists are supported and arts communities maintained, and centers artist-led organizing towards sustaining them. It is the framework for this year’s ECA Gallery Invitational and also of a panel conversation that constellates those ideas with local arts leaders. The ECA Gallery Invitational is an annual opportunity to highlight local artists addressing the spirit of the moment.
Jeff Kasper’s work asks driving questions around how we relate to one another, what responsibilities we have in those relationships, and how they're formed and codified. For his solo exhibition from October 5 - 28 for the ECA Gallery Invitational, Kasper presents a selection of new flags from his prototypes for white flags series, some smaller text-based scores, and projected video. Kasper’s immersive installation underscores relationships of mutuality as an aspiration and necessity. Attendees are invited to engage with select works where prompted.
A panel conversation follows on Mon, Oct 28 to continue exploring the ideas of In each other we trust—relationships, organizing, and sustainability in the arts. We seek to constellate these topics through a panel of local artists and organizations who are creating new ways of collaborating and presenting the work of artists in Easthampton.

Panel Conversation: In each other we trust - Oct 28 from 6-7:30pm in the BlueRoom
In each other we trust continues with a panel conversation on Monday, October 28 between local artists that explores relationships, organizing, and sustainability in the arts. The panel features artist Jeff Kasper, whose solo exhibition is on display throughout the month of October in the ECA Gallery, Emma Chubb and Matthew Cummings, the artists and curators behind the new gallery and project space Out Of Office, and Lisa Miranda, a musician and board member of The Heavy Culture Co-op (THCC, pronounced “thick”). Panelists across artistic disciplines who are creating new ways of collaborating and presenting the work of artists in Easthampton will share more about their projects and organizing ethos, and together weave possibilities for richly creative and well-supported futures. This discussion will be moderated by ECA Committee member and community arts organizer Maude Haak-Frendscho.

Jeff Kasper is an artist, writer, and educator working in public art, design, cultural accessibility, and social engagement. He creates text-based projects, social spaces, publications, games, digital media, exhibitions, community workshops, and participatory learning projects, often in partnership with organizations. His artworks center dialogical, reflective, and instructional texts, as well as pedagogical objects that prompt meditation, relationship building, and serious play. https://jeffkasper.co

Out Of Office (OOO) is a space for contemporary art in downtown Easthampton. It opened in September 2024 in a former German Lutheran meeting house that later became part of a lumber yard and then a private residence. OOO hosts exhibitions and events on a seasonal schedule with an emphasis on site-specific or site-responsive works. OOO is run by curator Emma Chubb and artist Matthew Cummings. https://www.oooeasthampton.com

The Heavy Culture Cooperative (THCC) is a cooperative owned and operated by workers, artists, and fans. THCC was founded in 2022 with the goal of establishing a music and performing arts venue that embraces various subcultures within the underground arts community. THCC is soon to open its venue in downtown Easthampton. Lisa Miranda is a musician and board member with a focus on policy and governance. https://www.theheavyculture.coop

Easthampton City Arts presents Making Meaning / Marking Time, a two-person exhibition by featuring Cati Bestard &#38;amp; Michael Medeiros&#38;nbsp;for the annual ECA Gallery Invitational.
In our 20th anniversary year, ECA is considering the passage of time and the moments that have marked our organizational impact, shaping how we look forward and project our aspirations into the future for arts and culture in Easthampton.

In this spirit of marking time, we look to the work of artists Cati Bestard and Michael Medeiros, whose respective photographic and ceramic installation works animate this year’s ECA Gallery Invitational. Bestard’s photographs, which take advantage of the medium’s visual capture of a moment in time, show us something more partial and fractured. Having used outdated film from the precarious era of the financial crisis, the photo processing is incomplete and the materiality of the prints are evasive of something purely representational. The photos embody the instability wrought with time, layering eras marked with instability onto the likewise rocky present tense. In holding multiple temporalities, they undermine a sense that a singular moment can stand alone, and the common feeling that a photograph represents a scene exactly.

Medeiros’ ceramic works and installation are inward-facing, reflecting on the passing of the artist’s father—a watershed moment in life—and how the impacts of his fathers time in the Vietnam war inflected their relationship and its legacy. Ceramics, as an intensive and process-oriented medium, likewise holds time within it much like photography. Even the use of clay as material—old as dirt—carries durational meaning. It is marked by a handmade quality, imprinted by an artist literally in the moment of its making.

Time is elastic, layered, and punctuated by events both personal and shared. Bestard and Medeiros each approach these qualities through their respective media and embrace the multiplicity of temporalities embedded within them, and invite asynchronous engagements that continue to develop.

Making Meaning / Marking Time will be accompanied by events featuring performance, a time-based art form, to continue to expand on and offer additional layers to the works of the exhibition. Co-curated by Pasqualina Azzarello, Easthampton Arts &#38;amp; Culture Program Director, Tracey Eller, ECA Committee Chair, and E. Maude Haak-Frendscho, ECA Committee Member.
Cati Bestard:&#38;nbsp;Cati Bestard Rotger, originally from Mallorca,
Spain, works primarily with photographic images, exploring the potential
of untold narratives and nonviable materialities. She earned her MFA
from Columbia University in 2018. Her work has been exhibited at
Ulterior Gallery (New York), La Capella (Barcelona), ChaShaMa (New
York), Times Square Space (New York), Crush Curatorial (Amagansett, NY),
Ortega y Gasset Projects (Brooklyn), Museu Palau Soterra (Girona),
Claustre de Santo Domingo (Mallorca, Spain), and Untitled (Miami).

She has participated in residencies at the Institute of Investigative
Living with Andrea Zittel (Joshua Tree, California), Hercules Art
Studio Program (New York), Art Workspace (Easthampton, MA), and Penumbra
Foundation (New York). In 2023, she published her photobook Ca s’abuela, which was presented in Mallorca, Massachusetts, and New York.

Alongside her artistic practice, she maintains a curatorial practice
and frequently collaborates with Dilalica, a Barcelona-based exhibition
space.&#38;nbsp;https://catibestard.com/
Michael Medeiros:&#38;nbsp;I work at the intersection of words and artistic imagery, with a deep
questioning of perceptive and conceptual experience driving my work.
Primarily a poet and ceramist, I also connect photography, printmaking,
fiction and narrative non-fiction into multidisciplinary personal work
and community collaborations. Mindfulness and the exploration of varied
methods of creative understanding and implementation are essential
aspects of my practice and teaching.&#38;nbsp;https://www.poesiapottery.com/</description>

The Belchertown Creative Economy Initiative utilizes the creative economy as a lens and methodology to enrich local economic vitality, strengthen sense of place, and improve quality of life. The creative economy is the organizations, businesses, people, and town departments and assets that participate in or platform the production and distribution of artistic and cultural goods and services to the community. The creative economy includes traditional arts and culture assets like performance venues, galleries, craft shows and artisan markets, museums, and arts education facilities along with the individual artists and artisans who both educate and produce work for these spaces. It also includes a wide range of creative businesses like designers, print shops, and tattoo studios, and is ripe with opportunity for crossovers to adjacent sectors including agriculture, outdoor recreation, food, beverage, and hospitality where the arts can also be integrated, such as with public art to activate and mark physical sites with community meaning, and bringing food trucks and other enterprises to cultural gatherings.

Grounded in the goals and recommendations set forth in the Economic Development section of the Town Master Plan, the LRRP, and Cultural Plan, I have developed a vision and strategy for the Town’s creative economy in order to ignite broader economic impact. This work is done in close collaboration with Town leaders, cultural organizations, artists associations, history &#38;amp; humanities scholars, and other local stakeholders.

The Town of Belchertown will seek applications from artists interested in painting a design on one of three recycling and waste collection containers located at the Town’s Transfer Station &#38;amp; Recycling Center. The goal is to create a more cheerful, pleasant atmosphere by making the containers more visually appealing. We also want the murals to engage residents with the idea that they are part of something bigger and, collectively with their neighbors, their contributions are part of a beginning process, not an end.Applications are invited via online submission by October 11, 2024 to be considered for these commissions. The full Call to Mural Artists includes dimensions, thematic considerations, timeline, evaluation criteria, and more.In preparation for the release of this call for art, project stakeholders engaged Transfer Station users through a survey, both online and in-person at the Transfer Station. Overwhelmingly, residents value the Station for its convenience, friendliness, organizational efficiency, and as a community gathering space. In addition to feedback about their experiences of the Transfer Station, they also shared sustainability imagery ideas and thoughts about the core values that represent Belchertown’s identity. Completion of the murals is projected for spring 2025.
