Shifts in Horizon: Perspectives on Landscape
June 1 - 8, 2012
Prompted by the immediate environment and history of the Marin Headlands landscape itself, Shifts in Horizon is an opportunity to envision and interpret the terrain around us. Led by Bay Area-based photographers Sean McFarland and Christina Seely with presentations by photographers Jason Fulford, Michael Light, and Suzy Poling, artist and archivist Rick Prelinger, and then-Assistant Curator of Photography at SFMoMA Lisa Sutcliffe. This workshop examines the subject of landscape representation through the photographic lens. Both hands-on and conceptually-oriented, participants explore the rich and complex local terrain through guided walks, a boat trip, photography-specific discussions, a natural history lecture, speculative histories, and field experiments. Participants utilize both antique technologies, such as camera obscura, along with new frotiers in digital photo manipulation; all points toward an expanded perspective on contemporary landscape.
